Who Qualifies for Solar Rebates, Tindo Solar Explains

Over the past few years, the prices of solar systems have become more affordable. To encourage more people to invest in solar power, the Australian government offers various rebates. You can stack different rebates to maximise the savings on your solar system costs. To maximise the benefits of solar rebates, it’s essential to verify your eligibility.

Every type of solar rebate targets a different group of people. So, the eligibility criteria differ from one solar rebate to another. Between federal and state solar rebates, things can get confusing. That is why you need the help of solar experts. They will advise you on the eligibility of your system for solar rebates.

To get started, here is a quick guide on the eligibility criteria of key solar rebates:

Small-Scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES)

As the name suggests, the SRES rebate is designed for small-scale solar systems. If you meet all eligibility requirements, you can enjoy upfront discounts on solar panels. Still, the eligibility scope of this rebate does not cover all small-scale solar systems.

By 2030, the SRES is expected to end.

If your solar system meets the eligibility criteria below, please apply as soon as possible. Otherwise, you will not be able to fully utilise this solar rebate. The main eligibility requirement for this rebate is the size of the solar system. Only small-scale solar systems with a capacity of under 100kW can benefit from this rebate. Your solar system must also be installed by a Clean Energy Council (CEC) accredited professional. The solar panels and inverter you install must be included in the list.

Another eligibility concern is the reliability and quality level of your solar system. It must comply with all local, state, and federal requirements. If the small-scale technology certificates (STCs) are not claimed within 12 months of the installation date, you will not be able to benefit from this rebate.

Solar Battery Rebate

In July 2025, the federal government launched the Cheaper Home Batteries Program. Under this scheme, you can enjoy a rebate of up to 30 per cent on the cost of your new solar battery. Still, you should ensure your home or business solar system meets several eligibility requirements.

The rebate eligibility criteria include a limitation on your solar battery storage capacity. It must be between 5 kWh and 100 kWh. Only the first 50 kWh of solar battery storage will be eligible for coverage under this rebate scheme. Eligibility is limited to solar batteries included on the Clean Energy Council’s (CEC) approved list. To receive a rebate, your solar battery must be installed by a Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA) accredited professional.

Eligibility requirements cover both connected and off-grid solar systems. However, grid-connected solar batteries must be capable of joining a Virtual Power Plant (VPP). Your solar battery system must not have previously received a rebate. Electric vehicle (EV) batteries are not eligible for this solar rebate.

City of Adelaide Solar PV Rebate

To enjoy up to a 20 per cent rebate on the cost of your solar system, it must meet the following eligibility criteria. The location of your property must be within the City of Adelaide council boundaries. You must be a concession card holder. Adelaide property owners and tenants are eligible to apply for this solar rebate.

City of Adelaide Battery Rebate

This state rebate offers a 50% discount on the installation costs of home and business solar batteries. However, the rebate is limited to a maximum $2,000. The solar battery you install must be new and Clean Energy Council (CEC) approved. All other eligibility criteria are the same as those of the City of Adelaide Solar PV Rebate.
