Which Batteries Qualify for the Solar Rebate and How to Select Them
If you have been thinking about investing in solar batteries for your home or business, 2025 is the year to do it. In July 2025, the Australian federal government officially launched the “Cheaper Home Batteries Program”. Through this scheme, you can enjoy around 30 per cent discount on the cost of eligible solar batteries.
By installing an eligible battery, you can make the most of your solar system. The right eligible solar batteries can also help you get more independent from the grid. In 2030, the solar battery rebate will end. Until then, the discount rate will decline annually. To maximise savings, you should invest in eligible solar batteries now.
To get started, here is more about eligible solar batteries and how to select them:
Which Batteries Are Eligible for the Solar Rebate?
The “Cheaper Home Batteries Program” is available to homes and small businesses across Australia. However, not all solar batteries can qualify for this federal rebate. To be eligible, solar batteries must meet specific criteria.
The solar batteries you install must have a nominal capacity between 5kWh and 100 kWh.
You can receive a rebate on up to 50 kWh of usable capacity.
Eligible solar batteries must be new. So, you cannot install second-hand or refurbished batteries.
Both on- and off-grid solar batteries are eligible for the rebate. However, on-grid batteries must be capable of operating within a Virtual Power Plant (VPP).
Only solar batteries listed on the Clean Energy Council (CEC) approved product list are eligible.
Some installation criteria must also be met for solar batteries to be eligible for a discount.
Your battery can be connected to a new or existing solar system. However, this is a one-time rebate per solar system. So, you must not have previously claimed this federal rebate on your existing solar system.
Eligible solar batteries must be installed by an accredited professional from Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA).
All solar batteries installed before July 2025 are not eligible for the discount.
vehicle batteries and EV charging systems are not eligible for this program.
How To Select Your Solar Batteries?
Just because a solar battery is eligible for the federal rebate, does not mean it is perfect for you. When it comes to solar batteries, there is no single best solution for all. Every home or business has different solar electricity storage needs. Some people are looking for solar batteries that increase their savings. Others want to maximise their independence from the grid.
In all cases, start by choosing solar batteries that are eligible for a discount. Most probably, older or poorly manufactured solar batteries are not eligible. Secondly, choose eligible solar batteries that meet your current and future needs. So, you can make the most of the federal rebate and maximise your upfront savings.
The brand of eligible solar batteries is another critical factor to consider. Well-established brand names offer quality, reliability, and favourable warranties. On the other hand, unknown brands might cut corners on safety and performance. So, they can sell their solar batteries at a cheaper price. Even if these cheap solar batteries are eligible for a discount, avoid them. Their low efficiency, shorter lifespan, and poor quality could cost you more over time.
